President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Second Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, introducing a landmark generational ban aimed at protecting public health and future generations from the harmful effects of tobacco.

The amended law, passed by Parliament on May 13, 2025, prohibits the sale, purchase, and use of tobacco products for individuals born on or after January 1, 2007. In addition, the Amendment bars individuals under the age of 21 from participating in any commercial activity related to tobacco, thereby reinforcing protections for young people.

The legislation also bans the import, possession, and use of machinery used for tobacco production. Furthermore, electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and all related accessories are now prohibited under the revised law. All forms of tobacco-related advertising, sponsorships, and promotional activities are also outlawed.

To ensure accountability and public trust, the Amendment mandates the establishment of a system for the transparent disposal of confiscated tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, vapes, and associated equipment.

At a ceremony held at the President’s Office, President Muizzu briefed journalists on the Amendment’s key provisions and its significance for the nation. The event was attended by senior government officials and students born after the generational cut-off date.

The Amendment has been published in the Government Gazette and is set to come into effect on November 1, 2025.
