President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated that enhancing nationwide healthcare services remains a top priority for his administration.

Speaking during the seventh episode of the Rayyithunaa Eku podcast, the President expressed confidence that the sector will see major improvements this year and the next.

He detailed several ongoing initiatives, including the relocation of the Maldivian Blood Services and the Thalassaemia Centre to the Orange Hiya building — a stalled project completed within a month by the Maldives National Defence Force. The upgraded facility offers expanded services for women and children, improved blood storage, and enhanced technical capacity.

On the same day, President Muizzu inaugurated new emergency services at Hulhumalé Hospital and a 75-bed Multi-Specialty Surgical Wing at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), bolstering emergency care and specialized surgical services.

The President also highlighted the formation of the Malé Group of Hospitals, unifying major health institutions in the capital to improve coordination and service delivery.

He underscored his administration’s focus on preventive healthcare, including a generational tobacco ban and the ratification of the Tobacco Control Act. Revenue from tobacco sales, he noted, will now fund prevention programmes.

President Muizzu welcomed the World Health Organization’s recognition of the Maldives' tobacco control efforts, calling it a national honor.
