President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on the public to view the Government’s tobacco control reforms not as limitations, but as critical steps toward a healthier nation.

His message was shared on his official X account in observance of World No Tobacco Day.

Reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to preventive healthcare, President Muizzu highlighted major initiatives such as the nationwide vaping ban introduced in 2024 and the recent ratification of the Second Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act. The amendment enforces a generational tobacco ban, prohibiting the sale, purchase, and use of tobacco products by individuals born on or after January 1, 2007.

“I urge each of you to see the reforms undertaken by the government not as restrictions but as progress for a healthier future,” the President said, emphasizing that the Government’s bold measures align with international standards and are vital for long-term public health.

President Muizzu also warned of the tobacco industry’s continued attempts to attract youth through appealing designs, flavors, and marketing. He called for collective vigilance and unity to counter these tactics and ensure a tobacco-free future for the Maldives.
