President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the introduction of eyewear services under the Malé City Group of Hospitals, reaffirming his Administration’s commitment to strengthening the health sector.

The new service will offer the public access to high-quality, affordable glasses, with the Aasandha allowance for eyewear set to increase to MVR 2,000. The initiative will begin at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and expand to other government-run hospitals.

Speaking in an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), President Muizzu said the decision was driven by public demand and careful evaluation. He emphasized that the service aims to reduce dependence on costly private providers and ensure citizens are not exploited for essential healthcare needs.

The President also reiterated his focus on public welfare, linking the initiative to broader health reforms, including efforts to curb cigarette sales. He said improving access to preventive healthcare is a cornerstone of his policy agenda.

Over MVR 400 million worth of healthcare projects are currently underway nationwide, targeting upgrades to medical infrastructure, enhanced staffing, and expanded services. The Malé region, in particular, is seeing focused investment to reduce the need for overseas treatment.

President Muizzu also announced that the health sector would be the first to undergo full digital transformation under the Government’s national digitalization programmed.
