Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has said that women’s participation in the fishing industry is steadily increasing, particularly in the processing and production sectors.
Speaking at the Lives and Livelihood Knowledge Sharing panel during the Islamic Development Bank’s Annual General Meeting, Minister Shiyam highlighted the government’s efforts to boost women’s involvement in the sector. While men continue to dominate fishing at sea, women are playing a growing role in the value-added production of fish products, he noted.
The Minister also said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policies focus on innovation, modern technology, and improving the quality of fish exports.
Addressing the challenges facing small-scale fishing businesses, Minister Shiyam pointed to high operating costs, fuel prices, and limited ice supply as key obstacles. He added that efforts are underway under the Lives and Livelihood Fund to address these issues, including installing saltwater cooling systems and equipping fishing vessels with solar photovoltaic (PV) power.
