The Maldives has been elected as one of the Vice Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for its landmark 80th session, running from September 2025 to September 2026.

In elections held on Monday at the UN Headquarters in New York, the Maldives secured one of the five seats allocated to the Asia-Pacific Group, alongside Bangladesh, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Timor-Leste.

The appointment comes at a symbolic moment as the Maldives marks 60 years of UN membership on 21 September 2025. As Vice President, the Maldives will preside over plenary meetings of the General Assembly and represent the President of the General Assembly when required, further reinforcing the country’s diplomatic leadership within the UN.

The UNGA elects 21 Vice Presidents for each session, including representatives from regional groups and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
