Former President Mohamed Nasheed has hinted at a return to presidential politics, expressing his intention to contest the 2028 presidential election.

In a message shared with senior members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Nasheed said he is considering a run but did not specify under which party banner he would seek election.

"I am thinking of contesting. How do you see it? Whatever you answer, our relationship will not be disrupted," Nasheed wrote.

Though Nasheed left the MDP in 2023 and joined The Democrats, he continues to maintain communication with his former party members. His message has sparked speculation about his political path ahead.

Nasheed made history by winning the Maldives’ first multi-party presidential election in 2008. He resigned from office on February 7, 2012, amid political unrest. He later served as Speaker of the 19th Parliament and currently holds the position of Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum.
