Former MDP Chairman (Reeko) Moosa Manik has expressed concern over the weakening of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), attributing it to the growing number of presidential hopefuls within the party.
In a video message circulating on social media, Moosa said the MDP is not destroyed but is significantly weakened, making it difficult to secure victory in the upcoming local council elections. He stressed that now is not the time for individual presidential ambitions, but rather a moment to unite and strengthen the party.
Moosa warned that the current internal divisions risk pushing the MDP toward collapse, leaving no strong political force to counterbalance the government. He added that the weakening of the MDP is allowing the government to bypass constitutional safeguards, ignore public interest, and operate without proper accountability.
So far, four members have launched campaigns for the MDP’s presidential ticket: former President Solih, MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail, MDP President Abdulla Shahid, and MP Dr. Shamaheed. Sources within the party suggest more candidates, both within and outside the MDP's core leadership, are preparing to enter the race.
