Maldives' Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad, has revealed that discussions are underway to introduce retirement visas for Maldivians wishing to spend their later years in Sri Lanka.

In an interview with state media, the Ambassador said many Maldivians are seeking a peaceful and comfortable environment after retirement, and Sri Lanka is seen as a desirable option. He noted that the necessary documents are currently being prepared in consultation with the Sri Lankan government.

Ambassador Imad expressed hope that once the documents are submitted, the two countries would reach an agreement to facilitate retirement visas — initially with a five-year validity period, rather than shorter, year-by-year terms.

He emphasized the deep-rooted ties between the Maldivian and Sri Lankan people, saying, “We have always been closely connected — like one people — and that should continue.”
