Brigadier General Retired Ibrahim Mohamed didi says that former president Uz Maumoom Abdul Gayyoom did not issue an order to open fire on inmates during the riot which broke out at the prison after an inmate, Evan Naseem, was beaten to death by prison guards, at the Maafushi Prison in 2003
In reference to Mohamed Nasheed’s statement marking 17 years to the incident, Mr Ibrahim Didi said that the current discussion on the open fire incident is of no use.
On Mr Nasheed’s statement, he said that the incident brought to light the truth behind the rumors of torture and killing of inmates by Maumoon’s administration to the Maldivian people, as well as the rest of the world. He also raised concerns on lack of sufficient investigation for the incident.
In regards to Mr Nasheed’s statement, many people raised their voice through social media calling for a proper investigation and in response, Mr Ibrahim Didi said that the investigation was held for the incident, and those who were accountable were penalised, hence he does not want to have further discussion on the matter on social media.
The death of Evan Naseem and the fatal shooting was investigated during Maumoon’s administration by a presidential commission. Charges were pressed against 12 people. Eight people were sentenced to death for killing Evan Naseem
