President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced changes to the dollar allocation for Maldivians traveling abroad for medical treatment, aiming to ease financial burdens and reduce dependence on the black market.

Starting August 1, 2025, patients receiving support from the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) will be eligible to obtain up to $2,000 through local banks—matching the existing allowance for patients under the Aasandha scheme.

In addition, individuals who travel abroad for treatment at their own expense will be able to access up to $1,000 through banks. Currently, self-funded patients are only allowed $500 via the Bank of Maldives for airfare, often forcing them to buy dollars at significantly higher rates on the black market.

The President said these changes are part of efforts to facilitate fairer and more accessible healthcare for all citizens.
