President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of a new domestic airport in Vihafaru, located in South Miladhunmadulu Atoll, will commence early next year. The announcement was made during his meeting with residents of N. Holhudhoo as part of his ongoing tour of the atoll.

President Muizzu stated that while Maafaru Airport currently serves the region, the additional airport will significantly benefit surrounding islands, including Holhudhoo, Velidhoo, and Fodhdhoo. He emphasized that the new facility will support the region’s growing tourism sector and upcoming economic diversification efforts.

The President also revealed that essential infrastructure works for Holhudhoo’s designated extension, Holhumeedhoo, are scheduled to begin next year. As part of the government’s development agenda, an Islamic Centre will be built on the island under new policy directives.

Several major infrastructure projects will be included in the government’s upcoming round of contracts in September, including harbour access improvements, land reclamation, health centre expansion, and the construction of futsal and handball courts.

Under Holhudhoo’s road development plan, the second phase will see the construction of a ring road. President Muizzu also assured residents that the island’s water system project will be completed within two months.

During the meeting, the Ministry of Education signed an agreement with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to build a new facility for Meyna School, one of the oldest educational institutions in the Maldives.
