The Sri Lankan government has announced a new policy of issuing one-year visas to Maldivian nationals, effective August.
Currently, Maldivians receive a 30-day visa on arrival, which can be extended up to six months for a fee. Under the new regulation, eligible Maldivians will be granted visas valid for one year without the current renewal requirement.
Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the change aims to further strengthen the longstanding bilateral relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
The decision is expected to be formally announced during Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s upcoming state visit on the 28th of this month.
In a broader move to boost tourism, Sri Lanka has also waived visa fees for visitors from 40 countries.
