The Maldivian government has collected MVR 1.1 billion in green tax revenue so far this year, according to the latest figures from the Finance Ministry.

This marks a significant rise of MVR 563.4 million compared to the MVR 587 million collected during the same period in 2024.

The increase comes alongside growth in the tourism sector, with data from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) showing that tourism beds rose by 2,674 in June, while occupancy rates increased by 43 percent compared to last year.

The green tax, introduced in October 2016, is charged to tourists staying in the Maldives. Resorts, hotels, and safari vessels levy a \$12 per night tax, while guesthouses charge \$6. Children under the age of two are exempt from the tax, which supports environmental protection initiatives across the country.
