Former MDP Chairman and ex-Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has accused the government of pushing Maldivians into severe financial hardship, saying the burden on people’s pockets has reached an unprecedented level.

Speaking at a campaign rally for Ali Azim, who is contesting in the MDP primary for the Malé Mayoral seat, Fayyaz said he is deeply concerned about the country’s future. He argued that the focus is no longer on the comfort of the capital or the challenges in the islands.

He claimed the country’s debt has risen to a level that cannot be repaid and alleged the government has no strategy to manage its obligations. He said the domestic economy has collapsed, small businesses have stalled, and ordinary people are becoming poorer, warning that many families are now struggling to survive.

Fayyaz further accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of seeking to govern through authoritarian methods. He said progress in other countries comes through wise leadership, but alleged that the President cannot manage a small nation like the Maldives.

He also criticized recent measures involving foreign nationals, stating that police questioning foreigners late at night mirrors practices from years ago. Fayyaz claimed these actions signal a renewed push toward authoritarian control, beginning with restrictions on foreigners and extending to efforts to silence government critics and the opposition.
