The UN Security Council will convene an emergency session on Tuesday to address the worsening situation of hostages held in Gaza, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon announced Sunday.
The decision follows the release of harrowing videos showing two emaciated hostages, sparking outrage in Israel and renewed international concern. “The dire situation of the hostages demands immediate attention,” Danon said on social media.
The footage emerged as humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate. UN experts have warned that a famine is unfolding in the enclave, where aid access remains highly restricted. Israel has faced criticism for limiting the flow of humanitarian supplies, while aid groups say much of the limited aid is being diverted or looted.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to deliver food to the hostages. Hamas responded by saying it would grant access only if humanitarian corridors were opened across all areas of Gaza.
Hamas’s armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, denied deliberately starving hostages but said they would not receive special treatment amid widespread hunger in the region.
The crisis has intensified calls in Israel for a ceasefire and a deal to secure the hostages’ release.
