Greece has joined a growing list of European nations delivering food aid to Gaza by air, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Saturday.
Two Hellenic Air Force aircraft dropped 8.5 tons of essential food supplies over Gaza in an operation coordinated with EU and Middle Eastern partners, Mitsotakis said. He pledged Greece’s continued push for an “immediate cessation of hostilities, the release of hostages, and the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid.”
The move follows similar efforts by Britain, France, and Spain, though UN officials warn that airdrops cannot replace the 600 daily truckloads of aid needed to meet basic needs in Gaza.
The UK government also announced an extra £8.5 million (\$11.4 million) in aid — part of a £101 million package for the Occupied Territories — on the condition that Israel allows more supplies to enter. Development Minister Jenny Chapman said the shortage was causing “appalling and chaotic scenes” as desperate civilians scrambled for aid.
Concerns over famine have grown after more than 21 months of war, which began when Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel in October 2023. Despite mounting global calls for a ceasefire, Israel’s security cabinet has approved plans for a major operation to seize Gaza City.
