Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, MP for South Hulhumale’, emphasized that corruption can only be prevented through immediate action rather than chasing it afterward, during a debate on the Finance Committee’s Special Audit report (2018–2020) on diesel purchases for Maldives Ports Limited.
The report was unanimously approved by the House of Representatives with 69 votes in favor.
Dr. Shamheed criticized the recurring nature of corruption cases, saying they persist every five years and remain unresolved. He stressed that the current approach will not stop corruption in the country.
Dr. Shamheed called for an independent investigation into MIFCO’s takeover of the ENSIS Company cannery in Hulhumale’, which occurred during former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration. He suggested that government favoritism may have played a role and highlighted discrepancies in the factory’s valuation. Dr. Shamheed urged an independent audit before any purchase is finalized.
