The European Union has condemned the killing of five Al Jazeera journalists in an Israeli airstrike outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Monday.

Among the victims was Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Al-Sharif, whom the Israeli military accused of leading a Hamas “terrorist cell” responsible for advancing rocket attacks. Kallas noted that while the EU acknowledged Israel’s allegations, “clear evidence” was necessary to uphold the rule of law and prevent the targeting of journalists.

The 27-member bloc remains divided over its stance on the Gaza conflict, with some nations backing Israel and others supporting the Palestinians. Last month, the EU agreed to boost aid access to Gaza, but implementation has been limited.

Kallas urged Israel to ease restrictions. “Whereas there is more aid coming in, the needs are still much greater. We urge Israel to allow more trucks and a better distribution of aid,” she said.
