The UN human rights office said Friday that at least 1,760 Palestinians have been killed while seeking humanitarian aid in Gaza since late May, marking a sharp increase from the 1,373 deaths it reported at the start of August.
According to the agency’s office for the Palestinian territories, 994 people were killed near Gaza Humanitarian Foundation sites, while 766 were killed along aid convoy routes. It said most of the deaths were caused by Israeli military actions.
The update came as Gaza’s civil defense agency reported at least 38 more deaths on Friday from Israeli fire, including 12 people waiting for aid. The Israeli military said its forces were working to “dismantle Hamas military capabilities” and were taking steps to limit civilian casualties.
Israel’s campaign, now in its 22nd month, has killed at least 61,827 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry figures considered reliable by the UN. The war was triggered by Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, which left 1,219 dead.
The UN and humanitarian experts have warned of famine as Israel continues to restrict aid into the territory. Meanwhile, Israeli military leaders confirmed this week that plans had been approved for a new offensive in Gaza City and nearby refugee camps, sparking international concern and domestic opposition.
