MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has accused the government of moving towards dictatorship by suppressing political criticism in the name of protecting nationalism.
His remarks came after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, speaking at the National Day gathering, said no one has the right to say or write whatever comes to mind if it undermines the dignity or reputation of others.
Responding on X, Fayyaz said rulers who aspire to dictatorship often seek to eliminate criticism under the pretext of safeguarding national honour. He argued that politicians’ reputations should be protected through sincere service, not by restricting free speech.
The former Economic Minister warned that silencing journalists and curbing media freedoms would only deprive the public of their rights, adding that any such laws would be repealed under a future MDP government.
His comments come amid growing concerns that the administration may seek to impose limits on freedom of expression and the press.
