Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has said every citizen should have their own e-wallet and a share in the country’s economy.
In a National Day message, Adeeb stressed that the most important duty of the state is to feed the people, save them from debt, and ensure housing and a peaceful life. He said the nation’s forefathers safeguarded the country through action, not by “sweet words on podiums or award ceremonies.”
Adeeb was indirectly critical of former Presidents Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Mohamed Nasheed, and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in his post.
Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison over the MMPRC corruption scandal, the biggest graft case in Maldives’ history. He was later pardoned by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The court also ordered him to pay a fine of MVR 2 million, of which he has paid half so far.
