Former Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed has stated that government officials are prohibited from accepting expensive gifts or money while in office.

Her remarks came after the release of MPs’ financial statements, which revealed that some members had received significant sums of money, properties, and flats as gifts.

In a post on social media, Dhiyana noted that the line between gifts and bribes is often very narrow. She emphasized that the law restricts officials from accepting gifts beyond a certain value.

The newly released financial statements showed that the Speaker of Parliament alone had received over MVR 900,000 from well-wishers during the past year.
