Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim has strongly criticized the government, warning that public patience is wearing thin amid rising economic hardship and what he described as reckless state mismanagement.
Speaking on RajjeTV last night, Azim accused the government of oppressing and humiliating citizens, adding that people will eventually stand up against such treatment. He highlighted the struggles of private businesses, noting that while the state is quick to penalize companies for unpaid taxes, it has withheld billions of MVR owed to various parties. He argued that if business owners can be jailed for non-payment, the same standard should apply to the government.
Azim further condemned state spending practices and rising debt, claiming billions are being wasted without benefit to the public. He said the government owes about MVR 10 billion to private companies yet continues to ignore the plight of ordinary citizens.
According to him, the people did not entrust the government with power to spend MVR 15 million daily. He added that reckless expenditure has driven up inflation, pushing the price of essential goods higher and leaving many struggling to pay water and electricity bills.
Calling for public action, Azim urged traders, women, and the wider community to join a mass demonstration planned for October 3. He said citizens must now take to the streets to hold the government accountable, warning that unless more voices are raised, the people’s struggles will not be resolved.
