Former Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamal has said the government should focus on policies that are realistic and within its capacity, rather than pursuing ambitious long-term plans.

His remarks come as the administration prepares to launch the 20-year National Development Master Plan in January next year. Criticizing the initiative, Maleeh argued that a government unable to bring the dollar rate below MVR 20 is not in a position to design a credible plan for the next two decades.

He said the government has failed to stabilize the economy and should first demonstrate what it can achieve in the coming two years before looking ahead to 2045.

The opposition MDP has also announced that it will not participate in the formulation of the national development plan, citing concerns over transparency and governance.

Meanwhile, the planning team has begun island visits to gather public input. The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has tasked Nexia Maldives, a local consultancy, with drafting the “Viluntheri Raajje 2045” plan, which was officially launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on September 17 last year.
