Attorney General Ahmed Usham has assured that the passage of the Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill will not take journalism back to 15 years, but will instead enable responsible reporting.

Speaking to state media, Usham emphasized that the bill is intended to regulate broadcasters and the media, not the general public or social media users.

He also expressed concern over misinformation about the bill being spread by some journalists on social media and urged the public to read the bill to understand its provisions.

The Attorney General noted that responsible journalists who report truthfully and uphold high standards will benefit from the new framework, while unverified or false reporting will have no place in the future of Maldivian media.
