President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Guraidhoo Airport will be inaugurated on Independence Day 2027, with all development works to be completed within 22 months.
Speaking to residents of Kolhumadulu Guraidhoo during his atoll tour, President Muizzu said the airport will serve as a vital gateway for the island and the wider region. He also revealed that national identity card and passport issuance services will begin in Guraidhoo this November.
On housing, the President confirmed the nationwide expansion of the Bank of Maldives’ home loan scheme, which provides financing of up to MVR 30 million without collateral. He added that 100 new housing units will be built in Guraidhoo next year, with the option for construction on individual plots.
Other upcoming projects include the reclamation of seven hectares of land linked to Gaadhiffushi’s reclamation works, harbour expansion under the 2026 budget, resumption of the stalled school project ahead of the new academic year, and the development of a modern children’s park before year-end.
