On World Mental Health Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu urged the world to recognize and safeguard mental healthcare for all.
Highlighting this year’s theme, “Mental Health in Humanitarian Emergencies,” he expressed concern over the insufficient global response to the psychological needs of people in prolonged crises, citing the situation in Palestine as a stark example.
“Emotional and psychological harm can be as devastating as the destruction of physical infrastructure,” the President noted. He stressed that mental health is a universal human right and the foundation of resilience for individuals, families, and nations.
President Dr. Muizzu reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to prioritizing mental well-being through policy and planning, including finalizing a comprehensive Mental Health Act, implementing national strategies for mental health and suicide prevention, expanding tele-mental health services across all islands, and embedding psychological first aid in emergency responses.
He further emphasized the importance of integrating mental health support into responses to climate, health, and humanitarian crises, and pledged continued collaboration with communities and international partners to keep Maldivians resilient and hopeful.
World Mental Health Day, observed annually on 10 October, aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and promote global well-being.
