President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that while not every citizen needs to be trained or armed, there is no cause for concern if the people wield the most powerful weapon granted by Almighty Allah, intellect, and align their thoughts with the nation’s interests.

He made the remarks while addressing the nation at this year’s official Victory Day function, held to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of those who defended the Maldives’ sovereignty on November 3, 1988.

Highlighting the country’s shared identity of faith, language, and traditions, President Muizzu said these values cannot be destroyed by external forces. He warned that the greatest threat to the nation arises when personal interests outweigh unity, stressing that national love and solidarity are key to safeguarding independence.

The President underscored the importance of honouring past sacrifices and expressed confidence in the youth who joined the National Service. He said the nation’s progress depends on harmony between government policies and public aspirations and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national infrastructure, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), and the Maldives Police Service.

He also noted that the 2026 national budget includes measures to improve service quality within these institutions and called for economic self-reliance as a foundation of true independence.

Concluding his address, President Muizzu urged Maldivians to cherish Islam as the nation’s greatest blessing and to preserve the stories of past heroes. He extended his well-wishes to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and the families of the 19 martyrs honoured at this year’s Victory Day ceremony.
