Former MP Hussain Mohamed has criticized the government’s decision to allocate more than 200 projects without a bidding process, describing it as a record of looting the state.

On Thursday, the government signed agreements with 53 companies to implement 206 projects worth MVR 2.7 billion under contractor finance. More than MVR 600 million worth of projects were awarded to companies with interests connected to the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).

Hussain said the move was a scam carried out under the Finance Act and questioned the absence of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) while public funds were being distributed. He called for an investigation into all involved and claimed that some of the projects were awarded for political campaigns, most of which would not be completed.

He also criticized the Bank of Maldives (BML) for investing in the projects, saying the decision violated corporate governance principles and reflected poor oversight.
