President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has instructed the Maldives Police Service to launch a major operation targeting individuals involved in drug trafficking. The directive was announced in a post shared on X.
In his message, the President said the government is intensifying efforts to make the Maldives a drug-free nation. He noted that more than 100 locations across the country will be searched simultaneously, with over 500 police officers participating in the operation.
According to the Maldives Police Service, the nationwide operation, codenamed Operation Alimagu, began Thursday. Police said the operation was launched based on intelligence reports, with specialised units and regional teams conducting coordinated searches and enforcement activities at multiple sites.
Police described Operation Alimagu as the largest anti-drug operation carried out in recent years. It forms part of the government’s broader strategy to dismantle drug trafficking networks and hold those responsible for spreading narcotics in communities accountable.
The President noted that the government has introduced significant measures to combat drug abuse, including legal reforms, treatment programmes, and rehabilitation efforts. Rehabilitation centres have already been established in N. Velidhoo, K. Kaashidhoo, and L. Gan, with continued support planned to help recovering individuals reintegrate into society and prevent relapse.
