Former MP and prominent lawyer Ali Hussain has called for an end to double pension and double health insurance benefits provided by some state institutions.
Ali raised the issue after Auditor General Hussain Niyazy revealed that certain institutions have created their own rules to grant double pensions, which goes against the purpose of the national pension scheme. The Auditor General also warned that such practices could place a significant burden on the state budget within the next decade.
Ali said that additional health insurance schemes for government bodies are unnecessary in a country that already provides universal healthcare.
Presenting his review of the proposed 2026 state budget, Auditor General Niyazy highlighted the urgent need to resolve the issue. He questioned the sustainability of the current state pension structure, noting that the defined benefit scheme introduced in 2010 is no longer viable and that even wealthier countries have transitioned to contributory systems.
He also noted that the 2026 budget does not prioritize addressing the double pension problem.
