MDP Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has resigned from his post, announcing his decision at the MDP National Assembly meeting held tonight. His resignation marks a surprise development within the party.

Fayyaz was elected MDP Chairman on 14 May 2022 following a competitive internal election. A source close to him said he stepped down to contest the MDP presidential primary ahead of the 2028 elections.

In his resignation letter, Fayyaz reflected on his tenure, noting he had worked to resolve internal party differences and manage challenges posed by leadership rivalries. He also highlighted disagreements over coalition strategies ahead of the last parliamentary elections.

Fayyaz warned that the political rivalry between President Nasheed and President Solih could pose a serious risk to both the party’s future and the nation. He expressed gratitude to National Assembly members and the public for their support. He assured that he would continue to serve the MDP as a National Assembly member and an ordinary party member.
