President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to transparency, accountability, and integrity, marking International Anti-Corruption Day with a message emphasizing the nation’s responsibility to combat corruption at every level.

Highlighting the Maldives’ accession to the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2007, the President described it as a “solemn obligation” and said the country remains determined to uphold the principles of the Convention with conviction and openness.

President Muizzu noted that systemic corruption threatens the rule of law, hinders development, weakens democratic governance, and undermines fundamental rights. He said his administration maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy and is committed to eliminating corruption through long-term institutional reforms.

He outlined several initiatives underway, including the Maldives 2.0 digital transformation programme aimed at modernising public service delivery, reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies, and ensuring full transparency in government transactions. He also highlighted ongoing work by the Anti-Corruption Commission, including asset recovery efforts, model legislation, and amendments to key laws such as the Penal Code.

The President further noted preventive measures such as the 20-year National Development Plan aligned with the National Anti-Corruption Plan, the ‘Himmi’ Corruption Risk Self-Assessment Toolkit for state institutions, and the establishment of a dedicated Anti-Corruption Academy to strengthen professional capacity nationwide.

While commending civil society organizations and UNCAC review mechanisms for enhancing accountability and cooperation, he stressed that government action alone is not enough—active participation from citizens and the private sector is essential. He added that the country's youth gives confidence in the nation’s future.

President Muizzu concluded by reaffirming the Maldives’ shared responsibility to uphold honesty, transparency, and vigilance in public life, stating the administration’s commitment to building a nation where integrity thrives, and the justice system remains fair and impartial.

International Anti-Corruption Day is observed annually on 9 December.
