MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has issued a statement calling for urgent action to address the mounting difficulties faced by yellowfin tuna fishermen across the Maldives.

According to the statement released on the occasion of the 45th Fishermen’s Day, Siyam noted that many fishing families continue to struggle due to reduced yellowfin tuna catch rates and ongoing delays in receiving payments for their fish. He said the situation has created significant financial strain for fishermen who rely heavily on the yellowfin tuna fishery for their livelihoods.

Siyam highlighted that insufficient prices and inconsistent market conditions remain key obstacles affecting the industry. He emphasized that resolving these issues is essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector.

He also urged relevant authorities and industry stakeholders to work collectively to secure better global market prices for Maldivian yellowfin tuna and ensure fishermen receive fair and timely compensation. The statement underscored the importance of listening to fishermen’s concerns and taking prompt action to safeguard the futures of families dependent on the yellowfin tuna fishery.
