The Criminal Court has filed charges against former Vice-President of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), Mohammed Fazeen, for allegedly sexually assaulting an employee.

The Prosecutor General’s Office charged Fazeen with sexual assault and assault on Sunday. If convicted, he could face three to seven years in prison, the office said.

The case involves a female Broadcom employee who alleged repeated sexual harassment and abuse by Fazeen. During a review by the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions, the employee stated that Fazeen touched her without consent and used offensive language.

Following the committee’s recommendation to remove him from office, Fazeen resigned before a formal parliamentary decision was made.

Fazeen’s lawyer has denied all allegations, stating that no evidence has been provided to support the claims.

Fazeen was appointed Vice-President of Broadcom on 19 January 2023 while serving as a member of the commission.
