Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has warned that the country will lose stability if leaders focus on staying in power indefinitely.

He made the remarks on X, raising concerns over the government’s proposed constitutional amendments to hold presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously.

Faisal said the changes, presented as a measure to reduce expenditure, appear aimed at consolidating power within the ruling party. He warned that such moves could undermine independent institutions, weaken Parliament’s oversight role, and increase government influence over key bodies, providing little benefit to the public.

To protect the country’s interests, Faisal emphasized maintaining Parliament’s independence, ensuring impartial appointments to independent institutions, and allowing a fully independent judiciary. He also called for fair public employment practices, long-term planning for development projects, and prioritizing regional development, education, health, and local employment opportunities.

Faisal cautioned that prioritizing political power over national interest could destabilize the economy and society, urging President Mohammed Muizzu to shape policies that serve the people rather than narrow political objectives.
