Parliament member Ahmed Shiyam, says that the government's intention towards the recently initiated cargo ferry service between India and Maldives is to turn it into a passenger transportation ferry.
Referring to the cargo ferry service, MP Shiyam said that this is under the government's plan to turn this service into a passenger ferry, after showing off the benefits of a cargo ferry service for the first 3 months. Hence, from the first 3 months, products of Northern Maldives will be exported more, and the cargo imported in the first 3 months will be sold at a lower rate in the domestic market and after 3 months this cargo ferry service will turn into a passenger ferry service, which will turn out to be horrific at the end.
Meanwhile the government has assured that this service will expand the export markets for local goods, and this will support local goods to be exported to the European market through India.
The cargo ferry service, operated by vessel with a capacity of 200 TEU and 3000 MT of breakbulk cargo will sail from Kochi to Kulhudhuffushi port in North Maldives and then to Male port. The cargo ferry will reach the Kulhudhuffushi port in North Maldives on 26th September and then to Male’ port on 28th September.
