The establishment of a Consular General in the Addu City, which was decided by the Indian government was recently announced by the Indian Embassy in the Maldives.

Since then, many have debated on the matter, whether it would be a good decision or not.

Sharing his views, Parliament Member for Addu City’s Maradhoo constituency, Mr. Ibrahim Shareef said that it will be a good decision to have an Indian consulate in Addu City. He also added that many countries do have embassies and consulates in friendly countries, such as the Maldivian High Commission and the Consulate office in India.

“We have a High Commission in New Delhi and a Consulate in Trivandrum to serve the interests of our people living there. We need to reciprocate this and I believe it is a good thing to an Indian Consulate in Addu,” said Shareef in a tweet.

“If the Maldives has a consulate in Trivandrum, it is reasonable to accept that India can have a consulate in Addu City,” said Shareef in his tweet.

MP Shareef suggested welcoming the Consulates of friendly nations such as India, who are ready to help us whenever the need arises.

Although the government of the Maldives has not shared its decision on the matter, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that a decision has not been made yet.

“So far, it is an Indian decision which will be communicated with the Maldivian government and bilateral discussions will be held using diplomatic channels. No decision has been made yet,” said the President while speaking to the local reporters.
