Decompression chamber in the new diving centre opened in G.dh Gadhdhoo
Along with a decompression chamber, a new diving centre opened in G.dh Gadhdhoo.

The Ira diving club and water sports centre is the first of its kind opened in the G.dh region with a decompression chamber. Apart from providing all diving equipment and water sports equipment, the diving centre supports in maintenance work of equipment as well.

Decompression chamber is a sealed chamber in which a high-pressure environment is used primarily to treat decompression sickness, gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene and non healing wounds etc. Decompression illness is thought to result from bubbles growing in tissue and causing local damage, while it results from bubbles entering the lung circulation, traveling through the arteries and causing tissue damage at a distance by blocking blood flow at the small vessel level.

This is very common in Maldives, especially from fishermen without proper diving training, who dives in to catch bait and ends up with severe cases of decompression illness, some of which have led to critical conditions as well.

Currently there is only one decompression chamber operated in Maldives, which is in Bandos Island Resort.
