The Health Authorities of the Maldives have confirmed the Alpha variant, which was first discovered in the United Kingdom, and the Delta variant, which was first discovered in India, spreading in the Maldives.

Speaking with reporters today, the Spokesperson for the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) Dr. Nazla Rafeeg said that the results of the samples sent overseas for sequencing have confirmed the spread of over five COVID-19 variants in the Maldives. Out of this, the highest number of samples was positive for the Delta and Alpha variants.

The statistics showed, 27 percent of the samples tested positive for the Delta variant, and 20 percent for the Alpha variant. In addition to Alpha and Delta variants, the results confirmed the existence of the variants G, GR, and Sub Lineage (Peru/Chile) in the Maldives.

The Delta variant of COVID-19 has now been detected in 74 countries, prompting fears it will become the dominant strain around the world, as it continues to spread rapidly. The highly infectious variant that was first detected in India has been found in countries including China, the U.S., and the U.K., according to the World Health Organization, where it accounted for more than 90% of new cases in the past week.
