USD 47.5 million given as a covid-19 crisis response emergency support loan from Japan to the Maldives.
The loan agreement was signed by the Minister of Foreign, Mr Abdulla Shahid and on behalf of the Japanese government, Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Keiko Yanai. The signing ceremony was held in the Foreign Ministry today.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Shahid said the USD 47.5 million loan provided by Japan will have a 0.01 interest rate and a 15 years payback time during which the first 4 years is considered as a grace period. Shahid further said that this loan is a massive aid by the Japanese government and it will provide further support in the response work for the covid-19.
In Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Keiko Yanai’s remarks at the signing ceremony, she has highlighted the exemplary work of the Maldives in response to the covid-19 crisis considering it has affected the economy of the Maldives badly. She further said that Japan will always be ready to support the Maldives.
