President of the Maldives, HE Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that the state institutions cannot withhold information to the public, and called all the state institutions to practice facilitating the freedom of information.
On the occasion of International Day for Universal Access to Information, the president highlighted the rights of obstructing the freedom of information while addressing through the ‘Mahoali’ magazine, issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office.
In his address, The President highlighted that respecting the right to information is a responsibility of each and all state employees and the purpose of the Information Commissioner’s Office, an independent state institution established, was to provide these rights to the public
The president stated that withholding the information regarding the state activities by the state institutions to the public is not a choice for its employees, rather getting information is a right for the people of the Maldives and all the state institutions should support the Information Commissioner's Office to distribute information properly. President also said that the state institutions should take the initiative on providing information and it is also the responsibility of all the employees at the state institutions to provide information and support the freedom of accessing the information.
President assures that the state's policy is to provide freedom of expression and freedom of media as well as the right to information, which are tools against stopping corruption, embezzlement, and other misconduct in the country. Noting that the constitutional powers of the state originated from the people and remained with the public.
President also said that hesitation of providing information will lead to mistrust in society and prioritization of providing information will lead to more transparency.
