Minister for Youth and Sports, Ahmed Mahloof demands to make a decision on the corruption case submitted to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office against him.
The corruption case against Minister Mahloof was submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to the PG Office. ACC requested the PG Office for charges against Mahloof in connection to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement case on June 9.
Meanwhile, Minister has highlighted the delay in processing the case by the PG Office, and that the decision on charging him with corruption is pending.
“President Yameen was charged within 7 days of case filing at the PG office, while MP Nihan’s case was processed within 10 days. But my case has been pending for 65 days. Make a decision whether I am charged against corruption or not,” said Minister Mahloof in his tweet.
Maloof also said that the PG office was unsure of when his case would proceed.
ACC said their investigation found the USD 33,000 in funds stolen from MMPRC was sent to then-parliamentarian Mahloof back in 2014. ACC said Mahloof received the money as a bribe to vote for the Special Economic Zone bill and to remain at the leadership of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Mahloof has denied the allegations of corruption against him and has said that the USD 33,000 transaction was for foreign currency exchange purposes.
Following the investigation by ACC and the requested charges, Mahloof was informed to step aside from his duties as Minister of Youth and Sports.
