Minister of Finance signs the agreement for the USD 47.5 million loan given as a covid-19 crisis response emergency support loan from Japan to the Maldives
During the ceremony ‘Covid-19 Crisis Response Emergency Support Loan’, Minister of Finance, Ibrahim Ameer signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives, and on behalf of the Japanese government, the Resident Representative for JICA Maldives Mitsuyoshi Kawasaki signed the agreement.
Speaking in the ceremony, Finance Minister Ameer said that Japan remained in assisting the Maldives in every challenge faced since establishing diplomatic relations in 1976, further noting the assistance by Japan after the Tsunami incident in 2004.
The USD 47.5 million loan provided by Japan will have a 0.01 interest rate and a 15 years payback time during which the first 4 years is considered as a grace period. Considering that, this loan is a massive aid by the Japanese government and it will provide further support in the response work for the covid-19.
Japan has also provided a support of 5.6 million USD recently for the capacity building of the health sector of the Maldives. And to further enhance the covid-19 response in the Maldives, Japan has also extended support to the UNDP Maldives with 1.4 million, UNICEF Maldives with 356,400 USD and 185,000 USD for Maldivian Red Crescent.
