Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) calls the government to ensure that the rights of the elderly are met and enhance the services provided to the elderly's.
In a statement released by the HRCM on celebration of the International Day of the Elderly Persons, HRCM reflected the challenges in the governments elderly care facility and called the government to address these challenges and strengthen the services provided to the elderly's through the government facilities.
Referring to this year's theme “Pandemics: Do They Change How We Address Age and Ageing?”, HRCM said the elderly's have more risk from the virus and urged everyone to follow all the guidelines by the authorities to make a safe space for the elderly's from the pandemic. HRCM stated that the objective of this year's theme is to encourage and be aware of the challenges faced during a pandemic, and prepare ourselves to tackle these challenges.
HRCM further encouraged the public to get more involved in caring for elderly's and the importance of becoming more considerate to their mental health wellbeing at a policy level.
Elderly community is growing around the globe, and as per HRCM Maldives is expected to have its 10% population as elderly by the year 2040.
Currently Maldives has a National policy level action plan related to elderly's, through which the state will enhance its services for elderly's.
