Prosecutor General Hussain describes the sentencing of a husband for marital rape for the first time, as a huge accomplishment for the country.

Ziyadha Naeem, a resident of G. Dh. Thinadhoo was brutally raped and beaten up by her husband Ibrahim Shaah. Ziyadha passed away while under treatment at the intensive care unit of IGMH on December 28, 2015. On the recent hearing for this case, the High Court ruled that forced sexual intercourse with anyone, even one’s wife, is a grievous harm to the victim. The court found him guilty of marital rape, and sentenced Ibrahim Shaah to three years in prison.

It marks the first conviction for marital rape in Maldives.

Referring to the case, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem said that the High Court ruling was a massive victory and the case would also set an example for marital rape cases. PG Shameem has also stated that he agrees that the three-year sentence is not enough, and said that he remains hopeful that Shah will be convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the three remaining charges.

Ibrahim Shah, was pressed with four charges following her death; marital rape, reckless homicide, negligent homicide, and possession of pornographic material.

As per the Police, the postmortem conducted revealed that Ziyadha sustained multiple injuries, and determined the cause of death to be an intracranial hemorrhage and Police have also stated that Shaah attacked Ziyaadha while they were living separately.
