Praising for the victory on the first conviction of marital rape case in Maldives, Ministry of Gender, describes it as a significant step to protect the rights of the women.

Ibrahim Shaah, who brutally raped and beaten up his wife Ziyadha Naeem, has been found guilty of marital rape, and the High Court has sentenced Ibrahim Shaah to three years in prison. At the recent hearing for this case, the High Court ruled that forced sexual intercourse with anyone, even one’s wife, is a grievous harm to the victim.

Marking it as the first conviction for marital rape in Maldives.

In a statement on Thursday, the Gender Ministry cheered the conviction as a great step forward for the local criminal justice system. The statement also said that while marital rape is declared a criminal offense by law, the ruling marks the first time for action taken against marital rape in a court of law.

Further adding in the statement, the Gender Ministry expressed appreciation to Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem and has said it recognizes the work of PG Hussain Shameem to protect the rights of women.

Ziyadha Naeem, 37, a resident of G. Dh. Thinadhoo was brutally raped and beaten up by her husband Ibrahim Shaah, while she passed away under treatment at the intensive care unit of IGMH on December 28, 2015. Ibrahim Shah, was pressed with four charges following her death; marital rape, reckless homicide, negligent homicide, and possession of pornographic material.
