Maldives announced a state of public health emergency on March 12, with reported cases of coronavirus, introducing a series of unprecedented restrictive and social distancing measures, including a ban on inter-island transport and public gatherings across the country.
As the restrictions are being eased in phases, Maldives reopened its borders on July 15, allowing resorts and hotels on uninhabited islands as well as liveaboard vessels to host tourists if the Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s guidelines were being followed.
Since then, tourist arrivals have increased through the resorts reopening, which has shown the benefits from the work done in reviving the tourism industry and we are seeing more liveaboards such as yachts arrive on the islands. As such we have seen the first yachts arrive at Uligamu island today.
Tweeting regarding the first yacht arrival at Ha. Uligamu, parliament member for Ha.Uligamu said that the arrival of the first yacht post Covid-19 locked down restrictions show hope for reviving the tourism industry post Covid-19 pandemic in Maldives. He further added that the states plan to develop city hotels and a yacht marina at Uligamu, will be benefiting the whole region.
The state has announced bid opening for the development of a city hotel and a yacht marina in Uligamu, welcoming local and foreign investors to submit their bids for the development of a city hotel and a yacht marina. A 36 hectare of land from Uligamu will be allocated for the development project. The deadline to submit bid proposals is till next month 5th, meanwhile on 22nd of October, an information session will be held by the Ministry of Tourism.
