Current Parliament majority holder Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is aiming to take back the Maldives to where it stood 30 years ago, says former Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.
He made this statement amidst MDP’s efforts to formulate a law to put an end to the opposition coalition’s ‘India Out’ campaign.
Commenting on it Dr. Jameel said on Twitter today that MDP formulating a law to put an end to the ‘India Out’ campaign is a reason why MDP should not be considered during Parliament’s Komandoo constituency member election. He also added that MDP’s aim is to take back the Maldives to the slavery the country suffered 30 years ago.
The bill being formulated by MDP Parliamentary members includes criminal punishments such as jail sentences and fines against individuals who act in a manner that disrupts diplomatic relations.
‘India Out’ campaign is led by the opposition leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. The campaign claims that Indian military personnel being stationed in the Maldives is a threat to the country’s national security.
The Government of Maldives has strongly rejected the attempts to spread false information using the “India Out” slogan, alleging that bilateral cooperation between the Governments of Maldives and India undermines the national security and sovereignty of Maldives.
